As I started my first day at Wildcat 91.9 KSDB-FM this morning I felt a little overwhelmed at first. Maybe it was the nerves settling because this is my first "real" broadcasting job or it was just the 2 poptarts I ate for breakfast. Regardless, after I got the required news stories out of the way for the day I had the chance to join Jax and Max on their everyday morning show. Immediately all my nerves were gone when I got on the mic with those two. Not only did they make me feel at home but also encouraged to really break down and understand how I can best use my story telling abilities within the station.
There are so many ways to tell stories nowadays from the traditional print in newspaper all the way to a short 30 second video on TikTok. So, where does radio fit in this increasingly overwhelming field of options to choose how you want to tell your story. Well, Podcasting. Podcasts and radio shows are almost identical. They have a brand or name to their show and they talk about things relevant to a specific crowd of people. I see radio as an opportunity to not only increase my toolbelt of editing skills with audio but also breaking down complex topics to help the everyday joe shmo understand whatever topic it may be.
So, I have done a lot of thinking leading up to my decision to start a 1 hour a week radio show/podcast that goes live on air on Sundays because I want to make sure this podcast brings new knowledge or something of value to the listener. That's why the name "The Sands of Time - A walk through the past, present and future of anything you can think of with your host Dawson Wagner" Is perfect. It's a long title that is still a work in progress but you get the jist.
To wrap up this update of my first day at Wildcat 91.9 I want to make sure future me that is reading this understands why I am going all in on radio right now. The relationships, memories and experiences I have already had in my first day truly is a privilege at this point in life. Jax and Max are a blast to hangout with and create promos, funny free style wraps and everything in between. This next year is truly going to be one for the books and I want to take things slow and appreciate this freedom of knowledge and experience that will help prepare me for life later on.
"TV gives everyone an image, but radio gives birth to a million images in a million brains"
- Peggy Noonan
I hope to add millions of images to the billions of brains around the world to better educate, communicate and demonstrate the future that we all have in store for us. Bring on 2022.
